Latin America and the Responsibility to Protect: Divergent Views from the South?

Ten years have passed since world leaders affirmed their Responsibility to Protect (RtoP, R2P) populations from genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity, and ethnic cleansing in the 2005 World Summit Outcome document. While tremendous advances have been made at both the conceptual and operational levels, far greater attention and action needs to be dedicated to moving the discussion on RtoP outside of the United Nations to ensure that actors at the national and regional levels are aware of and taking action to protect populations from atrocity crimes.  To contribute towards the advancement of the RtoP debate, CRIES (Coordinadora Regional de Investigaciones Económicas y Sociales), based in Argentina, has released a special issue of their academic journal Pensamiento Propio. This special issue, titled Latin America and the Responsibility to Protect: Divergent Views from the South? features the work of academics and practitioners from the region, providing insight and reflection into the views and contributions on RtoP coming from Latin America and how these can  aid in strengthening mass atrocity prevention mechanisms worldwide.

The Coordinadora Regional de Investigaciones Económicas y Sociales and the International Coalition for the Responsibility to Protect invite you to join us for a publication launch event on 5 October from 6:30-8:00pm on the 10th floor of the UN Church Centre. The Event will feature leading experts who will assess the progress, challenges, and way forward for RtoP in Latin America. Speakers include Andrei Serbin Pont, Research Coordinator at CRIES; Patrick Travers, Consultant at the UN Office for Genocide Prevention and the Responsibility to Protect; Tibi Galis, Executive Director of the Auschwitz Institute for Peace and Reconciliation; and William Pace; Executive Director of World Federalist Movement-Institute for Global Policy.
